Need guidence on chicken coop
Thinking about doing something for a half dozen birds. Was thinking about going 4X8X8' tall, with metal roof to harvest water off of.
Does anyone have any recommendations and or photos of theirs? I'm becoming more self sufficient, and this is one way to help me achieve some more food for the table. Peace, Renegade_01 |

Would use it for anything except cooking and drinking... Unless it is very well treated... JMHO |

I cut the 2x4s lengthwise. Mine is 8'x4'x2'. The little house can be separater from the cage. It's not pretty, but it's easy and cheap to make and pretty portable. The chickens seem happy too.

Did you guys "wing it" (pardon the pun) or use plans?

I think there are some links and/or threads on this site for builders and plans.

I completely "winged it" with wood I had leftover from other stuff
Mine is Not pretty like techguy's. But it does keep the birds safe and dry. One of Those automatic doors sure would be nice but I can't get my self to spend that kinda money on one. |

I am also thinking of starting out with a small flock (6 birds). I have this idea in my head of using pallets to build the coop as they are available for free. Might work, might not??? But it is worth a try...
Lots of coop ideas online, if you have any construction experience it should be easy to design your own from an image. I like this one but it would make for some pricey eggs!! |
Re: Need guidence on chicken coop
I catch water in a 55 gallon poly drum off my 12 x 12 chicken house/coop and use the water for my chickens. I put in an overflow pipe in the catch barrel and ran the overflow down to the cow water.

Great guys...yah I'm artistic so I have an idea of what I want to do...just need to sketch it out. I really like the work above! Nice! I'm pretty good building stuff, I just wish I had bought a larger miter saw.
I like the idea of using a water collection with a float valve to top off water feeders for the lil critters. Moving out to the sticks is the best thing I have done. Now I just gotta pay off 104k and be done with it. I have a badass local farmers market 1/4 mile down the road...I can sell eggs. |

Using pallets is a great idea. Especially if you have a source for the ones that are manufactured out of oak. Some businesses in this area will give them away.
